Technology and Liberty Project Internship

The ACLU of Washington is a state-based affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, a national nonprofit organization devoted to the protection of civil liberties. The ACLU uses a combination of litigation, negotiation, lobbying, and grassroots organizing to achieve its goals.

The Technology and Liberty Project of the ACLU of Washington (ACLU-WA) works to safeguard speech, expression, privacy and due process as public, private, and governmental entities in Washington state adopt new technologies.

Position Description

This internship is designed for graduate-level students studying the intersection of technology and public policy. Interns support the Technology and Liberty Project's research and public education efforts.

Technology and Liberty Project Interns may be asked to:

• Assist with the investigation and analysis of government programs.
• Research policies governing system operations.
• Brief staff on emerging technologies.
• Survey state-level technology legislation.
• Assist with public education events, such as policy round-tables.

This position is designed for graduate students focusing on technology policy (e.g. MPA, MPP), and is not intended for law students. Law students interested in the Technology and Liberty Project should apply directly to the ACLU-WAs Legal Internships/Externships program, noting their interest in technology-related issues.

This internship is unpaid and is housed at the ACLU-WA office in downtown Seattle, Washington. Interns are expected to make a three month commitment of at least 12-20 hours per week.
