Award Recipients
William O. Douglas AwardThe William O. Douglas Award is given for outstanding, consistent and sustained contributions to the cause of civil liberties; it is our lifetime achievement award. For 2009, the Award is presented to Phil Bereano for decades of activism and his prescient advocacy on issues of technology and civil liberties.
Civil Libertarian Award
The Civil Libertarian Award honors people who have made a recent outstanding contribution to the ACLU-WA or civil liberties in Washington State. The 2009 Civil Libertarian Award will be presented to Seattle attorneys, Jeffery Robinson and Amanda Lee, for their work on the John Adams Project to represent the high-value detainees at Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
Youth Activist Award
The Youth Activist Award is presented to a young person (age 22 or younger) or group of young people whose activism exemplifies work to defend and extend liberty and justice for all. The 2009 Youth Activist Award will be presented to Colin Moyer for challenging the teaching of creationism in his science class and for promoting freedom of speech at his school.
