Legal Financial Obligation Reform

Position: support
Status: Passed.
Bill: SB 5013

Sponsor: Sen. White

The legislation makes reentry easier for those coming out of the criminal justice system by allowing some of their Legal Financial Obligations (LFOs) to be stayed or waived entirely. Most people who have served their time re-enter society with very limited financial means. These legal system debts, which can accumulate at interest rates up to 12 percent a year, can be extremely burdensome and hinder individuals from successfully reintegrating into the community. The bill strikes a fair balance between holding offenders accountable for their financial obligations and offering realistic opportunities for success to persons reintegrating back into their communities.
