Surcharge on Unpaid Legal Financial Obligations
The ACLU opposes a bill that allows county clerks to impose on people who are out of the criminal justice system an annual fee of up to $100 for any unpaid legal financial obligations incurred as part of their sentence. Many of these individuals are already struggling to meet their financial obligations—including a mandated 12% interest charge—and this bill would present even greater and unnecessary obstacles for them to overcome before regaining their right to vote.
