ACLU Urges Spokane City Council to Strengthen Surveillance Proposal

News Release:

The ACLU of Washington is urging that the Spokane City Council strengthen a proposal for City acquisition of surveillance equipment. In a letter sent to council members today, ACLU-WA technology and liberty director Jamela Debelak said that while the ACLU supports the intention of the proposed ordinance, the current draft excludes from its scope key pieces of surveillance equipment and is missing some fundamental provisions related to remedies and transparency.

The ACLU provides specific recommendations that it believes will make the ordinance effective. The letter is attached, along with a model draft ordinance for approval of new surveillance equipment.
