News Release:
Tuesday, November 12, 2024OLYMPIA – Washington voters have rejected I-2109, which would have repealed the state’s capital gains tax. The tax provides critical funding for education programs including child care, early learning programs and school construction. Its repeal would have threatened the state’s ability to meet the mandate of the McCleary decision, which requires the state to fully fund its public education system.
M. Lorena González, legislative director for the ACLU of Washington, had this reaction:
“We are pleased that Washington voters rejected this shortsighted attempt to repeal the capital gains tax, which is a critical source of funding for child care, early learning programs and school construction – important components of our state’s education system. Washington voters are correct to demand a fully funded public education system and the wealthiest among us can afford to pitch in. Our young people not only need and deserve an education – it’s their constitutional right.”
