Take Action: Tell the House to support retroactive sentencing reform

We need your help again. Tell the House: If a law is determined to be a bad policy going forward, then it must apply with equal force to those already impacted.

Thanks to your activism, HB 1274 passed out of the House Community Safety Committee and is off to the next step: the House Appropriations Committee. It's time to keep building momentum!

Sign in PRO on HB 1274 by 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025, and let the House Appropriations Committee know changes made to our criminal legal system should be available to all, not just some.

HB 1274 provides an opportunity, not a guarantee. It will allow approximately 702 to 856 people – people who are currently incarcerated and serving unjust long sentences because of crimes they committed as children – the chance to be resentenced in line with current best practices. The legislature stopped the practice of punishing people twice in 2023 for any sentences determined after that date, so it's time to extend the benefit to all.

Washington can and should be a leader in cultivating a justice system that balances the need for accountability with the need for equity and second chances. By making the current law retroactive, we'll make sure no one is left behind.
