TRAFFIC SAFETY FOR ALL

The Traffic Safety for All bill prioritizes traffic stops for violations that endanger us most, like DUIs, distracted driving, not wearing a seat belt, speeding, or running a red light. These are the leading causes of Washington’s high accident and fatality rates on our roads.

This bill allows officers to continue pulling you over for safety-related reasons. Police will also still be able to ticket you for non-safety equipment violations, like a broken taillight or expired tabs once they’ve stopped you. They just won’t pull you over for those reasons alone.

The data shows that prioritizing stops for dangerous driving not only increases safety on the roads, but it also decreases racial disparity. The Traffic Safety for All bill is a data-driven solution to increase safety –for all of us.

Officers can pull you over for safety stops

Under the bill, officers would prioritize pulling motorists over for dangerous driving behavior, vehicle equipment violations that pose an immediate safety risk, driving with a license suspended for bad driving, certain serious misdemeanor warrants, and all other crimes.

Once pulled over, officers can still ticket you for…

  • Expired tabs
  • Other regulatory violations, such as failure to have insurance
  • Nonsafety related equipment violations such as having one taillight out or something dangling from your rearview mirror
  • Driving with a license that has been suspended because of inability to pay
  • All misdemeanor warrants
But these violations couldn't be the reason for pulling you over.
