Enoka Herat, Policing and Immigration Policy Program Director at the ACLU of Washington, had the following statement:

“The decision by the King County Prosecutor’s Office regarding the officer who killed Jaahnavi Kandula does not result in the accountability that Ms. Kandula’s family and the community deserves. While true justice would mean Jaahnavi never being killed in the first place, this case highlights the ongoing need for real transformation of policing culture and practices at the Seattle Police Department (SPD). Through the actions and words of its officers, SPD has failed the community and increased distrust rather than public safety. The city must hold the department accountable when it causes harm and work toward a place where all Seattle residents feel safe. Our thoughts are with Jaahnavi’s family.”
