This Independence Day, celebrate the Fight for Freedom by becoming involved with the ACLU of Washington.  You can utilize our activist toolkit, take quizzes, gather resources, and join our e-activist network.

Our Activist Toolkit includes four ways to celebrate and fight for civil liberties. First, you can hold a house party. House parties can provide information, motivate people for a specific action, increase membership, raise awareness about the ACLU, or celebrate victories.  At the party or on your own, you can contact your elected officials. They hold office to represent you.  The ACLU of Washington has resources on how to call, write, and meet your elected officials.

If you enjoy reading a certain news source, try writing a letter to the editor. Letters to the editor can serve as excellent advocacy tools for reaching a large audience and often bring up information not addressed in news articles. Online, you can find tips on how to write a letter to the editor and an online tool to help you find the editor you wish to contact.

If you’re interested in learning more about important bills in Washington, listen to a hearing. A list of hearings that have taken place recently on our priority issues is available on our website.

The summer is a popular time for outdoor activities that depend on free speech, from parades to festivals. Take our street speech quiz to learn about your rights to participate in free speech activities such as marches, rallies, and protests.   After you take the quiz, be sure to download free publications and resources including our  “bust cards” in English, Spanish, or Arabic.  These wallet-sized cards will help you in public situations if you are stopped by the police.

Finally, join our email activist list to receive updates, to keep informed, and to know when to act.  Your activism and membership in the ACLU powers our work in Washington state, Washington D.C., and throughout the country.  Won’t you join us?
