The Supreme Court significantly eroded the separation of church and state in public schools.

Refugee Joseph Doe, plaintiff in an ACLU of Washington suit challenging the Trump administration’s Muslim Ban, was finally able to hug his wife and three children last night, ending four years of painful separation.  The family was reunited at SeaTac airport after a federal court in December granted a nationwide injunction against a ban that would have indefinitely prevented children and spouses from any country from joining refugees like Doe, who have already been admitted to the U.S.

In another rejection of the Trump Administration, the U.S. District Court in Seattle today denied a government motion to stay a nationwide Preliminary Injunction the Court issued on Dec. 24, 2017, against an administration policy that indefinitely barred certain refugees from entering the U.S. Previously, on January 5, the Court rejected a government motion to reconsider the Preliminary Injunction.

The ACLU of Washington today joined ACLU affiliates in Montana and North Dakota in filing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit today demanding government documents about the on-the-ground implementation of President Trump’s Muslim bans. The lawsuit is seeking records from U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s regional office. In particular, the lawsuit seeks records related to CBP’s implementation of President Trump’s Muslim bans at SeaTac airport. Today’s action is part of a total of 13 FOIA lawsuits filed by ACLU affiliates across the country.

John Doe came to Seattle to pursue graduate studies and conduct research in Engineering at the University of Washington. Now he is a plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit filed in federal court in the Western District of Washington today challenging President Trump’s ban on travel by people from seven Muslim-majority nations.
